Sr Phlebotomist- Norfolk, VA

This position is based on site in Norfolk, Virginia. The Senior Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood samples accurately, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, and ensuring all procedures are completed according to hospital and laboratory standards. The role also involves maintaining patient safety, protecting confidential information, and supporting the daily operations of the laboratory.















The successful candidate verifies patient identity before every collection and confirms that test requests match the information provided by the nursing unit. Blood samples are collected through venipuncture and finger stick procedures while following strict infection control and aseptic techniques. Every specimen is properly labeled with the date, time, and collector information to maintain complete accuracy throughout the testing process.















The position requires maintaining quality standards by following laboratory procedures, documenting quality control activities, and reporting any issues that could affect testing accuracy. Any unusual or unclear test requests are discussed with physicians, nursing staff, pathologists, or reference laboratories until they are resolved. Unresolved concerns are reported to the supervisor when necessary.















The Senior Phlebotomist is expected to protect patient privacy by handling confidential medical information in both paper and electronic formats. Compliance with HIPAA regulations, company policies, and all required security and privacy training is essential. Employees must also remain current with all mandatory Natera training requirements.















Additional responsibilities include printing patient reports, answering and directing billing-related inquiries, arranging specimen pickups through courier services such as FedEx and MedSpeed, and providing general logistical support for laboratory operations. Continuous professional development through educational opportunities and industry resources is encouraged to maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills.















Candidates should have at least five years of phlebotomy experience along with a high school diploma or equivalent. A bachelor's degree is preferred, and a valid phlebotomy certification is required where mandated by state regulations. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work according to hospital policies, legal requirements, and accreditation standards are essential for success in this role.















The work is performed in an office and clinical environment where scrubs are required. Accurate tracking and documentation of every blood draw is an important part of the position.
