Islamabad Police physical test requirements 2026 - height chest and running standards

Applied for Islamabad Police (ICT Police) jobs 2026? The application stage is over — the physical endurance test is the next hurdle, and it eliminates more candidates than the written test. This complete guide covers the exact standards, how measurements are actually taken, a practical 3-week training plan, the most common reasons candidates fail, and what to bring on test day. We will keep updating this page as the department announces test dates and centres, so bookmark it.

About This Recruitment

The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police announced one of the largest federal law-enforcement recruitment drives of 2026 under the Ministry of Interior, with more than 1,500 vacancies across uniformed posts — Assistant Sub-Inspector ASI (BS-11), Constable (BS-07) General Cadre, Constable Band Staff, and Constable Mounted Police — as well as non-uniform posts such as Stenotypist, UDC, LDC and Data Entry Operator. Applications were accepted online only, and now that the application window has closed, every applicant moves to the same next stage: scrutiny and the physical endurance test.

Vacancies are distributed under Open Merit, ICT, Punjab, Sindh, KPK, Balochistan, AJK, Gilgit-Baltistan and Ex-FATA quotas, with separate quotas for women and minorities. Constable is a BS-07 post — you can estimate the monthly salary for any BPS grade with our free BPS Salary Calculator.

Selection Process: The 5 Stages

Understanding the full pipeline helps you prepare for the right thing at the right time. For uniformed posts, the process typically runs in this order:

  • 1. Application scrutiny — documents and eligibility are verified from your online application. Ineligible candidates are filtered out here.
  • 2. Physical measurements & endurance test — height and chest are measured first; only those who pass measurements proceed to the run. This stage eliminates the most candidates.
  • 3. Computer-based written test — qualifiers from the physical stage sit a CBT covering basic academics and general knowledge.
  • 4. Interview — shortlisted candidates appear with original documents.
  • 5. Medical examination & final merit list — selected candidates clear a medical check before appointment.

Non-uniform posts (Stenotypist, UDC, LDC, DEO) skip the endurance run and are selected through written tests and skill tests instead.

Physical Test Standards — Constable (BS-07)

RequirementMaleFemale
Height5 feet 7 inches5 feet 2 inches
Chest33 – 34½ inchesNot applicable
Endurance run1 mile (1.6 km) in 7 minutes1 mile in 10 minutes
Age18 – 25 years18 – 25 years

Age relaxation is only for candidates who reached the interview stage in the 2024 recruitment, as per court directions.

Important: The department has stated clearly that no relaxation is given in height or chest measurements — not even a quarter inch. If you are borderline, read the measurement section below carefully before test day.

How Height and Chest Are Actually Measured

Most candidates only think about the run, but measurements happen first and they are strict:

  • Height is measured without shoes, standing straight against the scale with heels together and head level. Your height is naturally slightly greater in the morning than in the evening (the spine compresses during the day), so a morning measurement works in a borderline candidate's favour — but you cannot choose your slot, so do not rely on this.
  • Posture matters. Practise standing fully upright with shoulders back. Slouching can cost you half an inch that you actually have.
  • Chest 33 – 34½ inches means a minimum of 33 inches un-expanded and at least 34½ inches with full expansion — the measuring staff checks both, and the expansion of roughly 1½ inches shows lung capacity. Practise deep breathing: inhale fully through the nose, hold, and expand the rib cage. Ten minutes of daily practice for two weeks measurably improves expansion.
  • Get yourself measured properly at home or a tailor's shop beforehand so there are no surprises on test day.

The 1-Mile Run: 3-Week Preparation Plan

Seven minutes for 1.6 km is a pace of roughly 4 minutes 22 seconds per kilometre — demanding if you have not been running, but very achievable with three weeks of consistent training:

  • Week 1 — Base: Run 2 km at an easy pace, 5 days this week. Do not worry about time yet; the goal is completing the distance without stopping. A walk-run mix is fine on days 1-2. Stretch for 5 minutes before and after every session.
  • Week 2 — Speed: Alternate days: one day of 4 × 400m fast intervals with 90 seconds rest between each, the next day an easy 2-2.5 km recovery run. The intervals are what actually cut your mile time — do not skip them.
  • Week 3 — Test simulation: Twice this week, run a full timed mile at target pace, ideally in the morning at a ground similar to a test venue. Then rest completely for the final 2 days before your actual test — tired legs on test day waste all three weeks of training.

Pacing strategy for test day: the biggest running mistake is sprinting the first 400 metres with the crowd and burning out by the half-mile. Run the first half at a controlled hard pace, hold through the third quarter, and empty the tank only in the final 300 metres. A steady 1:45 per 400m gets a male candidate home in 7 minutes.

Top Reasons Candidates Fail (Avoid These)

  • Failing measurements before ever running — not knowing their real height/chest until the scale.
  • Starting too fast and collapsing in the last lap — pacing beats raw fitness.
  • Brand-new shoes on test day — blisters have failed more candidates than stamina. Run in joggers you have already trained in.
  • Reaching the venue late — gates close, and late arrival means elimination regardless of fitness.
  • Wrong or missing documents — candidates with everything prepared still get turned away for forgetting the printed roll number slip or original CNIC.
  • Heavy meal or energy drinks right before the run — cramps and nausea mid-run are common and avoidable.
  • No sleep the night before — anxiety is natural, but a rested body runs 20-30 seconds faster on the same fitness.

Test Day Checklist

  • Original CNIC and a printed copy
  • Roll number slip / test intimation — print it as soon as it is issued on the portal; do not rely on your phone screen
  • Educational certificates (original + copies)
  • Domicile certificate
  • 2 recent passport-size photographs with blue background
  • Sports kit: trained-in joggers, track suit or shorts, and a water bottle
  • A light meal 2-3 hours before — bread, banana, dates; nothing heavy, nothing experimental
  • Reach the centre at least 1 hour early — verification queues are long

For Female Candidates

This recruitment explicitly invites female applicants, with reserved quotas across provinces. The standards are adjusted — height 5 feet 2 inches, no chest measurement, and the 1-mile run in 10 minutes, which is a brisk-jog pace of about 6 minutes 15 seconds per kilometre. The same 3-week plan above applies; simply run the Week 3 timed miles at the 10-minute target. Female candidates historically face less competition per seat on reserved quota positions than open merit, so a well-prepared female applicant has a genuinely strong chance.

What Comes After the Physical Test?

Candidates who clear the physical stage move to a computer-based written test, followed by an interview. For constable-level posts, the written test typically covers basic English, Urdu, general knowledge, Pakistan studies, Islamiat and everyday mathematics. Start light preparation now — 30 minutes of general knowledge daily — instead of waiting for the physical result.

We will publish a separate written test syllabus and preparation guide. For all updates on this recruitment — test dates, roll number slips, results and merit lists — keep checking our Islamabad Police jobs page, and browse the latest openings on our Pakistan jobs page.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Islamabad Police physical test 2026?

The department announces test dates and centres on its official portal after application scrutiny is completed. This page will be updated the day the schedule is announced, so bookmark it and check back.

Where will the physical test be held?

Test centres are notified with the schedule, usually at police lines or designated grounds in Islamabad. Your roll number slip / intimation will state your exact venue and reporting time.

What happens if I fail the height or chest measurement?

You are eliminated at that stage — the department has stated no relaxation is granted in physical standards, and measurements are taken before the run.

Can I retake the endurance run if I miss the time?

No, the run is a one-attempt test on your scheduled day. This is exactly why the 3-week preparation and full rest before the test matter so much.

Is the physical test the same for ASI and Constable?

Physical standards apply to the uniformed posts (ASI, Constable, Band Staff, Mounted Police). Non-uniform posts such as Stenotypist, UDC, LDC and Data Entry Operator are selected through written and skill tests without an endurance run.

What should I wear for the test?

A track suit or shorts with a t-shirt, and joggers you have already trained in. Avoid jeans, sandals, or anything you have never run in before.

What should I eat before the test?

A light meal 2-3 hours before — bread, banana, dates. Do not run on a full stomach, and do not try energy drinks for the first time on test day.

If I fail this time, can I apply in the next recruitment?

Yes, as long as you still meet the age and eligibility criteria at the time of the next advertisement. ICT Police recruitment is generally announced once a year, so treat this attempt seriously.
