OpenAI ChatGPT Performance Engineer – USA
OpenAI is seeking a senior-level ChatGPT Performance Engineer to join their engineering team in the USA. This individual contributor role focuses on scaling the performance, reliability, and efficiency of mission-critical systems like ChatGPT and the OpenAI API, where safety and responsible deployment take priority over unfettered growth.
Role Responsibilities
- Analyze and optimize performance across application, middleware, runtime, and infrastructure layers, including networking, storage, Python runtime, and GPU utilization.
- Develop tooling and metrics to provide deep observability into system performance.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, platform, training, and product teams to drive systemic improvements.
- Influence architecture and design decisions to prioritize latency, throughput, and efficiency at scale.
- Lead investigations into high-impact performance regressions or scalability issues in production.
- Drive performance testing strategies and help define SLAs and SLOs for critical systems.
Candidate Requirements
- Bachelors degree.
- 7+ years of software engineering experience with a strong track record in performance or reliability of high-scale distributed systems.
- Deep familiarity with performance profiling tools and tracing systems.
- Experience optimizing performance across layers such as databases, networking, storage, application runtimes, and GPU utilization.
- Strong understanding of OS internals, scheduling, memory management, and IO patterns.
- Demonstrated success navigating ambiguity and aligning stakeholders around performance goals.
