About the Canvas Core Team

The Canvas Core team builds and maintains the foundational platform powering Mural’s visual thinking experience. Responsibilities include the infinite canvas, key editor components, document editing behaviors, asset management, real-time collaboration, and the Mural UI. The team also manages the real-time message protocol and developer-friendly APIs used by internal teams to build diagramming, workshops, presentations, integrations, and AI-enabled product capabilities. The mission is to keep the editor fast, reliable, intuitive, and easy to build on by prioritizing performance, simplicity, developer experience, and platform quality.

Your Mission and Responsibilities

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will design, build, and improve the Canvas platform to ensure high performance and reliability. You will partner with Product, Design, and Engineering to solve complex technical problems, reduce platform complexity, and help teams ship high-quality experiences safely.

• Own and deliver new Canvas platform capabilities from problem definition through release and iteration.
• Design maintainable systems with accountability for quality, performance, reliability, and developer experience.
• Contribute to developer-friendly APIs and service boundaries for internal teams.
• Use AI-assisted tools and agentic workflows to prototype, implement, test, and document work.
• Build and evolve canvas systems with rich document models, spatial indexing, layout behavior, asset management, and selection mechanics.
• Work on large-scale concurrent and real-time collaboration systems, handling event ordering, latency, and conflict resolution.
• Integrate AI-enabled product capabilities where they intersect with the canvas and real-time systems.
• Improve performance through profiling, bottleneck analysis, and targeted optimization.
• Strengthen the team through technical design reviews, code reviews, mentoring, and improved engineering practices.

What You’ll Bring

Applicants must possess a Bachelor's degree and 6+ years of relevant software engineering experience. Candidates need fluency in modern JavaScript or TypeScript, with familiarity in React, Node.js, or comparable modern frameworks, alongside strong engineering judgment.
