Humanized Job Description — Managing Director, Indirect Tax Technology

Job Title: Managing Director, Indirect Tax Technology (SALT)

Ref #: 2236588

Published: March 18, 2026

Category: Tax Specialty

Location: Chicago IL | Charlotte NC | Houston TX | Remote

Type: Full Time

About the Role
At Forvis Mazars, we're looking for someone who genuinely understands indirect tax — not just the technical side, but what it means to help clients transform how they manage it. This isn't a back-office role. We need a leader who enjoys being in front of clients, building relationships, and driving real change through smart use of technology.
If you have deep experience implementing tax engines, a knack for spotting process gaps, and the kind of presence that earns trust in a boardroom — this role was built with you in mind.

What You'll Actually Be Doing
Tax Technology & Transformation
You'll take the lead on indirect tax engine implementations — think AvaTax, Vertex O-Series, ONESOURCE — from early-stage design conversations all the way through to go-live. That means sitting down with clients' finance teams, IT departments, and executive stakeholders and helping them understand what's possible with the tools they already have, as well as what they might be missing.
Day to day, you'll review and guide the production of deliverables — presentations, workflow diagrams, requirements documents, test scripts, and client memos. You'll also help sharpen the firm's internal delivery framework by refining templates, project plans, and data mapping tools that the broader team relies on.
Just as important: you'll bring your own indirect tax knowledge into every engagement, and you'll know when to pull in subject matter specialists to round out the team's expertise.
Growing and Leading the Team
This is a people role as much as a technical one. You'll mentor junior and mid-level team members, help shape the training curriculum for tax engine implementations, and take an active hand in recruiting talent that strengthens the practice. Part of your job is to identify where the team's skills need to grow — and then actually do something about it.
Business Development
You'll work alongside Forvis Mazars leadership across Tax, Consulting, and Audit to develop go-to-market strategies, contribute to proposals and marketing materials, and serve as engagement leader across the full range of Indirect Tax Transformation services. That also means getting out there — attending industry events, writing articles, speaking at webinars — and representing the firm in a way that opens doors.

What We're Looking For
Required:

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, MIS, Computer Science, or a related discipline. A Master's degree is a plus.
At least 10 years of hands-on experience in indirect tax engine implementation and tax transformation.
Strong familiarity with AvaTax, Vertex O-Series, and ONESOURCE.
Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office, with particularly strong Excel skills.
Experience with Alteryx or similar automation platforms.
Background representing the tax function in ERP and ecommerce implementations; exposure to Microsoft, NetSuite, SAP, Sage, or Workday is a definite advantage.
A clear understanding of the full tax cycle and how tax workflows operate within it.
Willingness to travel as client engagements require.

Preferred:

CMI designation in Sales and Use Tax (Institute for Professionals in Taxation).
Broad indirect tax knowledge spanning both compliance and technical areas.
Proven ability to juggle multiple projects without losing attention to detail.
A natural eye for process improvement and comfort working with complex tax data systems.
