Senior Backend Engineer - Commercial Systems and Intelligence in Berlin

SumUp is hiring a senior-level IT professional for the Commercial Systems and Intelligence squad in Berlin, Germany. Operating from an office-first setup within the Acquisition Mission under the Run & Grow tribe, this newly formed team builds the infrastructure for merchant acquisition attribution, commission calculation, and merchant lifecycle tracking.

Core Responsibilities

• Aggregate ecosystem data to determine acquisition channels and sales agent impact on merchant actions.
• Automate manual commission workflows for field and tele-sales, partnerships, and referrals by establishing data models and API contracts.
• Collaborate with the Merchant Intelligence squad to build the centralized Lifecycle Event Log.
• Develop internal backoffices and APIs for sales representatives and leaders to monitor commissions, manage portfolios, and resolve disputes.
• Define API contracts, set testing and observability best practices, and utilize AI and agentic coding tools deliberately.

Requirements and Background

Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree and bring 5+ years of relevant experience. You should have a strong backend engineering background in Go or be a typed-language generalist ready to ramp up quickly, along with experience designing APIs and distributed systems. The role requires fluency in relational and analytical databases like PostgreSQL and Snowflake, experience with Kafka-based event-driven systems, and a background in auditable, high-trust domains such as fintech or payments. You must be comfortable building services from scratch in greenfield, early-stage squads and effectively bridging technical and non-technical audiences.
